  • Is verbatim translation the best translation?

An abstract translation or verbatim translation is not necessarily the best choice of translation. A contract, notarized documents between different countries, and stakeholders involved documents are subject to a verbatim translation. However, for an instruction manual with hundreds of pages to be translated, reference materials, or other documents, an abstract translation is preferred in order to save the time of translation and proofread and to save a lot of money.

  • Is there a security mechanism implemented to protect the document?

Will the documents entrusted to be translated be disclosed to the public without authorization? Is there a security mechanism implemented to protect the secrecy of the document?

Famous has worked with countless customers with attentive service provided and a complete professional security mechanism implemented; therefore, customers are able to provide their documents to Famous for translation with a peace of mind.

Because most native speakers’ writing skills are more fluent and appropriate than those of second language speakers; therefore, when assigning a translator for work, the principle is as such: for a translation case from foreign language to Chinese, we will ask a Chinese translator to translate it. On the contrary, for a translation case from Chinese to foreign language, we will ask the said foreign language-speaking translator to translate it. In addition, Famous will consider the degree of professionalism of the manuscript, the field of industry, and the intended use of the translated document to select the appropriate translator for the job.

  • What documents should I provide?

Provide final version of the manuscripts for translations

When providing original manuscript for translation, it is best to provide the final version without the need of making any further revision. Any modification or change made to the contents of the manuscripts is likely to cause interruptions or confusion in translation, which will not only slow down the completion of the translation work, but also affect the quality of the translation.

    Materials for reference

Some manuscripts are highly specialized and contain a large number of professional terminologies or phases used specifically by the customers. If the relevant references are enclosed while providing manuscripts, it will not only save the translation time, but also help improve the correctness and satisfaction of the translation.

  • What information should I provide?

Intended use of the translated documents

First of all, Famous will ask the customers about the intended use of the translated version because the overall style of writing and the use of words will be different for the same manuscripts with different purposes of use. For example, the translation of academic papers must be standardized and affirmative; the translations of advertisements and design scripts must be without tedious and difficult wordings, instead it should be light-and- easy-to-understand and attractive. Therefore, different translation techniques and style of writing must be adopted for the manuscripts with different intended uses.

Intended user of the translated documents

Secondly, Famous needs to understand the users of the translated document. Is the translated document intended for the use of academics, professional manufacturers, general public, or just for personal use? Are the users of the translated document British, American, Taiwanese, or Chinese? The custom and culture of each nation will affect the use of words in the translation work. For example, Taiwanese will not understand the “U disk” used in translations and maybe mistake it as “Frisbee,” but it actually refers to “USB” in China.

  • How do I control the budget for the translation service needed?

You can base on the purpose of the translation, professionalism, and timeline to budget the funds for translation service. For example, for a document with hundreds of pages to be translated, you can cut down the contents or abstract the key points to save time and money. For contracts, notarial documents, professional articles that must be handled by experienced and professional translators, charges may be high; manuscripts that needed to be translated urgently must be handled promptly at a higher rate.

There are many translation agencies advertising the “lowest price” to attract customers, offering a quote much lower than the standard charge by having the document translated by inexperienced students or part-time translators with disregard of translation quality. However, “you paid what you got and you got what you paid.” Too many unrealistic expectations may eventually lead to discord between the two parties. No matter which translation agency you choose, the most important thing is to hold the correct recognition and reach a win-win situation through full communication and mutual agreement.
